As waters rise, residents of Ondo call on Governor Aiyedatiwa to declare a state of emergency

Ayetoro is a coastal hamlet in Ondo State's Ilaje Local Government Area that has been hit hard by the sea for some time now. The young people there have asked Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa to declare a state emergency because of the constant flooding.

The development has reportedly forced the displacement and homelessness of at least 5,000 individuals as a result of the development's incessant environmental hazard, according to the teenagers.

Thompson Akingboye, speaking on behalf of the teenagers, expressed regret that the community's maternity and health centers, schools, and small-scale companies had been destroyed by the ocean surges.

According to Akingboye, the government should build an embankment and make sure the community's shorelines are protected so the people don't perish as the town sinks into the ocean.

He lamented that "no tangible respite has come" despite the community's immense significance and the peril it faces. Houses are falling into the water, erosion keeps happening, and people keep dying.

"None of the protests or petitions sent to the government by indigenous groups or individuals at any level have resulted in any action whatsoever. The tale of the Ayetoro community's experience with the sea surge is now one of tragedy, loss, and violence. Death, loss, neglect, fraud—it's a tragic tale. A tragic testimony to the non-existence of governance.

Because of this invasion by the sea, we have literally lost billions of naira. Economically, socially, educationally, and health-wise, our entire lives have been profoundly impacted.
