Disgraceful that Ondo has not had a fully operational stadium in 49 years of its existence - SWAN

The Ondo State branch of the Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN) has characterised the state's incapacity to own a functioning stadium since its establishment in 1976 as shocking.

The scenario where the state has relied on Akure Township Stadium, owned by the Akure community for the previous 49 years, was denounced in a statement published by SWAN following its meeting in Akure.

The group expressed worry over the new development.

The most recent National Sports Festival was held in Ogun State, and SWAN was not happy with how the state team did overall.

The SWAN-affiliated clubs were forced to play outside of the state last season due to the stadium's "sorry state," and the statement requested Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa to urgently save the venue.

Since the Sunshine Stars FC and Sunshine Queens, two state football clubs, were compelled to play home matches outside of the state due to the Akure Township Stadium's dismal condition, Congress voiced their profound worry over the issue. This led to the relegation of the Sunshine Stars FC from the first division.

In a press release, the organisation demanded that the state government immediately begin rebuilding the abandoned new stadium in Araromi in Akure, saying that the state has been lacking a state-owned stadium since its inception.
